Our Inis Eoghain Heritage by Brian Bonner was first published in 1972 and last issued in 1991. A fully comprehensive history of Inishowen, it was written to let us know something of Inishowens past, to make us fully aware of its 'rich inheritance and unique character'. Knitting together history, folklore and everyday life, it is a very enjoyable and informative read that anyone with a connection to Donegal can relate to.
After almost 20 years of being out of print, this edition has just been published by The Bookshop and is already receiving warm approval from many quarters for its content, its superb cloth cover and stunning dust jacket.
The new introduction is by local historian and author Sean Beattie who had the pleasure of interviewing Brian on a few occasions. He confided the research for his first book was mainly done during lunch breaks at the National Library, the Public Record Office and also at the State Paper Office in Dublin Castle. This was in the sixties before photocopying existed. Brian was allowed access to documents relating to that period of Irish history. He spent many precious hours writing by hand in pencil the original manuscript in a large blue ledger.
'Our Inis Eoghain Heritage' was received with glowing reviews when it was first published.
"A notable contribution to Irish local history for which the author is to be warmly commended" The Irish Independent.
"This book is the most interesting and informative yet written on any part of Co. Donegal" The People's Press.
The new version has been re-issued in a limited edition of 500 copies which has just been published and are selling out fast as wonderful Christmas presents for anyone with an interest in Co. Donegal.
